We are excited to present our annual Close Encounters house concert this summer on July 25, 2026, featuring GRAMMY-nominated lutenist Ronn McFarlane and Richmond, Virginia guitarist Andrew McEvoy.
In this spellbinding concert, McFarlane and McEvoy explore the wonders of both the ancient world and the modern one. Through the warm, intimate pairing of lute and guitar, the two artists reveal a lost kinship between their instruments, creating a rich tapestry of sound that invites listeners to a place out of time.
Guests will enjoy music hand-crafted from 16th- and 17th-century lute tablature, including works by John Dowland and Francesco da Milano. In the hands of McFarlane and McEvoy, the unique tonal blend of lute and guitar breathes new life into ancient music, while also inspiring original works composed by the performers themselves. Like the courtly music of the Renaissance, these new pieces are refined, expressive, and deeply connected to the popular musical traditions surrounding their creators.
“[Ronn McFarlane provides] some of the most ravishing lute playing to be heard anywhere.”
— The Washington Times
“What a delightful surprise… McEvoy proves himself to be a guitarist of great skill and craft.”
— Classical Guitar Magazine
Advance tickets secure limited seating at this private house concert. Proceeds benefit the education and outreach missions of Tidewater Classical Guitar.
